Scientista Insider Seminar: Aging and Memory

Dr. Rosanna Olsen, Baycrest

Through our academic outreach, we have the potential to make a real and positive change in the community by providing the tools and guidance for young women pursuing STEMM. This is one of our key areas of focus here at University of Toronto Scientista, and a source of much success for our Non-Profit. This seminar event saw highly esteemed Dr. Rosanna Olsen deliver a keynote presentation of her journey as a woman in the world of science. She shared with us her experience from completing her PhD at Stanford University, to her role at the NIH, to where she is today, as a Scientist at the Rotman Research Institute (RRI) at Baycrest. Her current research centres around understanding the representational nature and neural organization of human memories. Students and faculty at this event had a blast!

Coding Crash Course: Python & R

Learning New Skills

One of our most anticipated events of the year - our coding workshop!! Held on International Women's Day, this 2 hour crash course covered the basic fundamentals of programming in R, with Dr. Jessica Robin, and in Python with Michelle Arkhangorodsky. Attendees had computers available in which they could follow along, create their own program, and get creative with the endless possibilities! This annual course provided an introduction into skills students can build on for their own futures.

Professional Development Seminar

Shaping Your Future

One of the ways U of T Scientista celebrates empowering women is by connecting freshly aspiring students to women already succeeding in their field. This Professional Development Seminar offered an opportunity for undergraduate girls to interact with a diverse panel of graduate women - from areas such as mathematics, biological research, ecological studies and so much more! Our panel had amazing insights into undergraduate research opportunities, graduate studies and how to be your best professional self! Attendees also had the opportunity to have high quality headshots taken at this event.

Conference

Women Coming Together

This year, U of T Scientista will be holding its first annual conference during the second semester. This conference will host a variety of female STEMM keynote speakers, workshops, and a professional and sophisticated networking event at the end of the day. Stay tuned for more information!

Bake Sales

Raising the Funds

At U of T Scientista, we love to host both academic and social events to bring together the community and provide exciting opportunities. Like everything in this world, that requires money! We like to hold bake sales full of delicious treats (cupcakes, brownies, cookies - you name it!) to help raise money for our events. The next time you see our bake sale table, come support your fellow women in STEMM!

Zumba

Maintaining Our Health

Each semester, Scientista holds a Zumba event in collaboration with Hart House Fitness where our girls can have fun and stay active together! Suitable for all levels of zumba-ers, this event is not only a blast but works up quite a sweat! Keep an eye out for our next class!
